Class II Biosafety Cabinets For Pathogenic Samples

TION's Class II cabinets isolate hazardous biological materials, preventing cross-contamination between the user, the sample and their environment. Ensuring your operators are safe & secure 24hrs a day.

Advanced Microbiological Protection

Our class II cabinets create a sterile work environment to contain pathogenic biological materials at biosafety levels 1, 2 and 3. The cabinet's inflow air protects the operator with ULPA/HEPA-filtered downflow air creating an ISO Class 3 work surface to reduce cross-contamination. Typically, 70% of the air is recirculated while the remaining 30% is exhausted back into your laboratory or externally via roof-mounted ventilation stacks.

At TION, our products feature a modern, 9-inch digital control panel with integrated airflow controls, energy-efficient LED lighting, ULPA filters and UV sterilisation as standard. Ensuring your staff receives a sophisticated product that's safe, secure and simple to operate.

Class II Biosafety Cabinet Datasheet
Biosafety Cabinet Service Package
What Standard Functionality Do Your Biosafety Cabinets Include?
All of our class II microbiological safety cabinets feature twin ULPA filters for air downflow and extraction, a 9-inch touch-screen control panel, UV decontamination light, double power socket, stainless steel work surface and height-adjustable stand.
Can You Manufacture Bespoke Biosafety Cabinets?
Yes, TION can manufacture bespoke biosafety cabinets. In fact, our clients usually require specific design modifications that consider the product's location and operating conditions. These include size adjustments, filter replacements (HEPA H14 or ULPA) and the unit's internal work surfaces. The manufacturing process we apply allows our design team to create bespoke units at no additional cost.
Which Biosafety Cabinet Software Control System Do You Use?
We have developed our own proprietary control system in-house. Our customisable solution includes industry-standard software functionality, such as lockable alarms, live airflow monitoring, sash height alarms and twin airflow sensors. In addition to a bespoke red-light alarm system, UV decontamination light, programmable timers for periodic tests, filter replacements and UV light replacements.
How Quickly Can I Have A Biosafety Cabinet Delivered?
TION hold class II biosafety cabinet stock locally in the UK for immediate dispatch. Our project management team will deliver, install and commission your unit (or units) within seven days. If you require a bespoke design or size, this timeline may be extended at no additional cost.
How Often Should I Service A Biosafety Cabinet?
According to the BS EN 12469 standards you should service your biosafety cabinets once every 14 months. This standard outlines the performance criteria needed to achieve certification. However, some organisations will choose to test their cabinets every six months to ensure their samples and staff remain safe from biological hazards.
How Often Should I Change The Filter?
Class II biosafety cabinets use HEPA H14 or ULPA filters to remove dust, bacteria and viruses from the air. HEPA & ULPA filters usually last between three to five years, with carbon lasting just 12 months. However, this depends entirely on the type and frequency of tests being performed. For more information on how to change the TION biosafety cabinet filter, please visit: Biosafety Cabinet Maintenance: How To Replace Your Filters.
What Filters Should I Use In A Biosafety Cabinet?
There are two types of filter that can be used in a biosafety cabinet: a HEPA filter, and a ULPA filter. HEPA filters remove 99.97% of particles, viruses and bacteria from the air down to 0.3 microns. ULPA filters remove 99.999% of contaminants down to 0.12 microns. Either HEPA H14 or ULPA filters are suitable. TION's Class II biosafety cabinets all come with preinstalled with ULPA as standard.
When Do I Need To Decontaminate A Biosafety Cabinet?
We recommend fumigating (decontaminating) your Class II biosafety cabinet when performing substantial maintenance works (filter or fan replacement), relocating the unit, or after a hazardous event (for example, after the accidental spillage of a toxic material or biological substance).
What Are The Top Things To Consider When Moving A Biosafety Cabinet?
The first priority before moving the cabinet is cabinet fumigation (commonly referred to as decontamination). To prevent the spread of infectious contaminants, we recommend fumigating your biosafety cabinet before moving the unit. You should also ensure you have enough "dead space" around the unit to maximise performance. If you have a Class II B2 biosafety cabinet, repositioning your extraction duct will also need to be considered.
What Is A Biosafety Cabinet?
A biosafety cabinet (BSC) is an enclosed containment device designed to house hazardous biological materials. The primary function of a BSC is to protect the user from particulates, viruses and bacteria. There are three classes of biosafety cabinet available, Class I, Class II, and Class III. TION specialise in manufacturing Class II biosafety cabinets. These units insulate the sample from contamination via external sources and protect the operator.
How Does A Biosafety Cabinet Work?
A biosafety cabinet removes airborne particles, viruses and bacteria through high-capacity HEPA or ULPA filters for personnel, product and environmental protection. An internal fan draws air through the sash of the cabinet. 70% of the air is recirculated through a HEPA filter with downflow air blown over the sample in a smooth laminar flow. 30% of the air is vented back into the room or, with a Class II B2 biosafety cabinet, extracted to the atmosphere.
What’s The Difference Between A Class 1 and Class 2 Biosafety Cabinet?
A Class I biosafety cabinet is defined as "a ventilated unit for personnel and environmental protection". These cabinets do not prevent sample contamination or manipulation. However, a Class II Biosafety cabinet or Class II BSC protects both the user and the sample, allowing the operator to experiment with a broader range of biological materials and prevent cross contamination. For more information, please visit: The differences between a class I & class II biosafety cabinet.
Is A Biosafety Cabinet Suitable For Any Type Of Acid Or Substance?
No. Although Class I, Class II and Class III biosafety cabinets can facilitate a broad range of biological materials, they are not designed for chemical use. In this instance TION would only recommend purchasing a ducted or ductless fume cupboard.
How Long Does It Take To Install A Biosafety Cabinet?
Installing a Class II biosafety cabinet is usually a simple process. It's the biosafety equivalent of a modern-day plug-and-play system and allows engineers to position and commission the cabinet without ductwork. As such it can be installed in a day. A Class II B2 biosafety cabinet is the exception to this rule. As it is a ducted unit that can take anywhere from two to seven days or more to install. It's important to note that all B2 ductwork must be maintained under negative pressure.
How Much Does A Biosafety Cabinet Cost?
A Class II type A2 biosafety cabinet will cost around £4000 to £8000, depending on the specification and size of the unit. If you choose a ducted B2 model, this can increase significantly.
