We often get asked about the practicality of manufacturing our fume cupboards from polypropylene, but the answer is surprisingly straightforward. The material is simple to maintain and clean. It's also mechanically rugged and features a high chemical resistance when compared with other metals and plastics.

Advanced Control Panel

We use two main types of control panel for our recirculating fume hoods:

1. Our standard touch panel which allows the lights, fan speed, sockets to be adjusted. This versatile unit is straightforward which allows users to get up and running with very little or no training. If we use this control panel a separate low airflow alarm is fitted for safety and to comply with the European certification requirements.

2. VAV 9” Touch Screen. This touchscreen control panel controls everything from the set point of the face velocity to the calibration of the alarm. The control panel will also display the current face velocity at all times. This unit allows the user to be in total control of the cupboard settings. If a solvent alarm is fitted to the unit the set point and alarm is also integrated into this control panel. When this unit is fitted, the cupboard also has Variable Air Volume which means that a set face velocity can be set and the fan will speed increase or decrease as the sash is opened and closed to keep the air velocity constant. This ensures safety and compliance while increasing the efficiency and longevity of the cupboard.

There are many safety features that can be built into the design of our ductless cupboards. These include low air flow alarms (both visual and audio), VAV (Variable air volume) systems to ensure constant face velocity and other systems such as fire suppression and fire collars can be installed to maintain a safe working environment.

What Is A Ductless Fume Cupboard?
A fume cupboard is a piece of laboratory equipment designed to protect users from dangerous gases, particulates and vapours. A ductless fume cupboard (sometimes referred to as a recirculating fume cupboard) uses a built-in carbon or HEPA filter to remove toxic chemicals or particulates before recirculating the clean air back into the lab.
How Does A Ductless Fume Cupboard Work?
A ductless fume cupboard removes airborne particles, gases and vapours through high-capacity carbon or HEPA filters. An internal fan draws air through the sash away from the user which is passed through a filter (or combination of filters) and recirculated back into the lab. No external ducting is required. As such, a ductless fume cupboard is usually easier to install than a ducted one.
What Type Of Filter Do I Need In My Ductless Fume Cupboard?
A ductless or recirculating fume cupboard can facilitate a carbon or HEPA filter (sometimes, it's a combination of both). Carbon filters are effective against acids, solvents and other chemical types. HEPA filters remove particulates, i.e. powders and dust. Which filter you choose depends on the process taking place inside the cabinet. If you are unsure which filter you require, please contact us and we will be happy to help.
What’s The Difference Between A Ductless and Ducted Fume Cupboard?
A ductless or recirculating fume cupboard is a self-contained fume extraction unit. The process of scrubbing (cleaning) harmful toxins from the air takes place inside the cabinet via a HEPA or carbon filter. Ducted fume cupboards require a functional air duct to carry contaminants from the lab to an exhaust stack outside.
Is A Ductless Fume Cupboard Suitable For Any Type Of Acid, Chemical Or Substance?
No. Although a ductless fume cupboard can facilitate acidic substances, the filters (carbon or HEPA) inside the cabinet degrade over time. This degradation allows small pockets of particles to pass through and contaminate the filtered air. For this reason, we only recommend using mild to moderate chemical strengths at low volumes. Anything below five ppm (parts per million) should be questioned.
How Long Does It Take To Install A Ductless Fume Cupboard?
Installing a ductless fume cupboard is usually a simple process and can be completed in as little as a day. It's the fume extraction equivalent of a modern-day plug-and-play system, allowing engineers to position and commission the cabinet without ductwork.
How Much Does A Ductless Fume Cupboard Cost?
Generally, a ductless fume cupboard will cost the same as a ducted fume cupboard, which is anywhere from £6,000 to £10,000, depending on the complexity and size of the unit. The real difference lies in the installation cost, as air ducts need to be installed for a ducted cupboard.
