Fume Extraction Using Laminar Flow Technology
A laminar flow fume cupboard is a laboratory ventilation device similar to a Class II B2 biosafety cabinet. Its primary function is to shield the operator from harmful vapours and protect the sample from cross-contamination. This includes fumes and particulates generated during the scientific process.
It achieves this by creating an uninterrupted stream of HEPA filtered laminar flow air over the work surface. The air is then exhausted into the atmosphere using a roof-mounted ventilation stack. In addition to this, an external extract fan ensures a consistent face velocity to maintain the containment of harmful substances.
Our units feature 7" digital touch screens as standard with optional VAV control. TION's technology allows personnel to access critical airflow data reducing equipment downtime. We manufacture each unit using corrosion-proof welded polypropylene, extending the lifespan of our cabinets by up to 10 years.
Our products eliminate cross-contamination between different airstreams outside and inside the cabinet. It functions like a cleanroom on a smaller scale, which explains its ISO5 certification. These attributes make the product ideal for applications like trace metal analysis and contamination testing, where sample isolation is paramount. It also reduces corrosion and the filter replacement costs associated with something like a Class II biosafety cabinet.
Lighting is an essential aspect of the unit to ensure the safety of the operator and the specimen. The best option for lighting in a laminar flow fume cupboard is LED. It lasts longer and offers better clarity.
We often get asked about the practicality of manufacturing our fume cupboards from polypropylene, but the answer is surprisingly straightforward. The material is simple to maintain and clean. It's also mechanically rugged and features a high chemical resistance when compared with other metals and plastics.
A laminar flow fume cupboard produces an uninterrupted stream of air over the work surface. Laminar flow air (meaning smooth) reduces the chance of turbulence inside the cabinet, thereby preventing cross-contamination.

The difference between a laminar flow fume cupboard and a Class II B2 biosafety cabinet lies in the filtration of the extract. Laminar flow fume cupboards feature no extract filtration and should not be used for dangerous biological samples.
