Laminar Flow Fume Cupboards

Fume Extraction Using Laminar Flow Technology

TION's Laminar Flow Fume Cupboards protect both the sample and the user. We combine laminar airflow technology with chemical fume extraction for specialist dual-purpose applications.

Protecting Your Staff & Samples

A laminar flow fume cupboard is a laboratory ventilation device similar to a Class II B2 biosafety cabinet. Its primary function is to shield the operator from harmful vapours and protect the sample from cross-contamination. This includes fumes and particulates generated during the scientific process.

It achieves this by creating an uninterrupted stream of HEPA filtered laminar flow air over the work surface. The air is then exhausted into the atmosphere using a roof-mounted ventilation stack. In addition to this, an external extract fan ensures a consistent face velocity to maintain the containment of harmful substances.

Our units feature 7" digital touch screens as standard with optional VAV control. TION's technology allows personnel to access critical airflow data reducing equipment downtime. We manufacture each unit using corrosion-proof welded polypropylene, extending the lifespan of our cabinets by up to 10 years.

Laminar Flow Fume Cupboards VS Class II Biosafety Cabinets
Laminar flow fume cupboards feature no filtration on the extraction duct and therefore should not be used with harmful biological materials. Class II B2 biosafety cabinets do, allowing them to filter particulates before exhausting the air into the atmosphere. TION specialise in both cabinet types, with each range supported by a team of qualified engineers.

Why Should I Purchase A Laminar Flow Fume Cupboard?

Our products eliminate cross-contamination between different airstreams outside and inside the cabinet. It functions like a cleanroom on a smaller scale, which explains its ISO5 certification. These attributes make the product ideal for applications like trace metal analysis and contamination testing, where sample isolation is paramount. It also reduces corrosion and the filter replacement costs associated with something like a Class II biosafety cabinet.

Eco-Friendly LED Lighting

Eco-Friendly LED Lighting

Cost-effective LED lighting separated from the work area.

Cost-Effective Lighting

Lighting is an essential aspect of the unit to ensure the safety of the operator and the specimen. The best option for lighting in a laminar flow fume cupboard is LED. It lasts longer and offers better clarity.

Polypropylene Carcass

We often get asked about the practicality of manufacturing our fume cupboards from polypropylene, but the answer is surprisingly straightforward. The material is simple to maintain and clean. It's also mechanically rugged and features a high chemical resistance when compared with other metals and plastics.

An internal fan is installed to create a clean downflow inside the cabinet. Either ISO5 or ISO4 using HEPA and ULPA filters.

Laminar Flow Air

A laminar flow fume cupboard produces an uninterrupted stream of air over the work surface. Laminar flow air (meaning smooth) reduces the chance of turbulence inside the cabinet, thereby preventing cross-contamination.

Five Things to Consider When Choosing Fume Cupboards
Five Things to Consider Before Purchasing a Ducted Fume Cupboard
Fume Cupboard Service Package
A laminar flow fume cupboard uses laminar air flow in its process of protection. TION's laminar flow fume cupboards protect both the user and the sample from particle-contaminated air. This air is drawn through a HEPA filter and blown down over the workbench creating a smooth, laminar flow airstream over the sample.

The difference between a laminar flow fume cupboard and a Class II B2 biosafety cabinet lies in the filtration of the extract. Laminar flow fume cupboards feature no extract filtration and should not be used for dangerous biological samples.

A laminar flow fume cupboard works by removing airborne particles, gases and vapours, similar to a Class II B2 biosafety cabinet. An internal fan draws air through the sash of the cabinet. 70% of the air is recirculated through a HEPA filter and blown down over the sample in a smooth laminar flow. 30% of the air is exhausted into the atmosphere.
The key difference between a laminar flow fume cupboard and a Class II B2 biosafety cabinet is the filtration method. A standard Class II B2 biosafety cabinet filters particulates before exhausting the air to atmosphere. Laminar flow fume cupboards do not. Because of this, it should not be used for dangerous biological samples.
Technically yes, because of its high acid resistance and compliant face velocities. However, due to the airflow pattern and the reduced sash working height, we would usually recommend a ducted fume cupboard in most situations. Especially when using high volumes of chemicals.
A ducted laminar flow fume cupboard can take between three to seven days (or longer) to install, depending on the complexity of your project. TION would need to consider your ventilation requirements, building specifications and make-up air. However, you can expedite this process if you have a thorough specification brief detailing your needs.
A laminar flow fume cupboard will cost around £15,000 to £20,000, depending on the complexity and size of the unit. With an integral HEPA filter and fan, the manufacturing process is longer than a standard fume cupboard.
Red Light Alarm System
The TION control system incorporates a state-of-the-art red light alarm system to signal an airflow fault. This functionality is especially useful in loud environments or large, unmanned laboratories where visual fault recognition is a priority. When alarming, the cabinet's internal light will be switched off and replaced with a red beacon until the issue is resolved.
