But while disposal is often treated as an afterthought, it's an important consideration that requires your time and attention. However, it's also the most likely to be rushed, or, in some cases, skipped entirely when staff are under strict time constraints. HEPA and carbon filters are designed to trap the contaminants a fume cupboard is supposed to contain, which means a used filter, by definition, is a hazard, not a safeguard. These cannot go into general waste. They need to be classified and handled as hazardous waste in their own right, bagged and then sealed before removal. Hazardous waste can only be transported and disposed of by a licensed waste carrier. This is not optional or a matter of choosing a convenient contractor. Facilities teams should confirm a carrier's licence before handover, rather than assuming that a company offering removal services is automatically authorised to handle hazardous material.
Every stage of hazardous waste disposal should generate paperwork, and that paperwork is what protects a facilities team if a regulator ever asks questions later. This typically includes a waste transfer note for general waste components and a hazardous waste consignment note for anything classified as hazardous, showing where the material went and who took responsibility for it at each stage.
